The Damage Started It. Something Else Is Keeping It Going.

Most people with tinnitus believe the same thing: my ears are damaged, and that damage is making the sound I hear.
That makes sense. Most cases do start with damage. Loud noise. Aging. Medication. An injury. Something hit the ears.
But the damage started the ringing. It is not sustaining it.
If damage alone sustained the sound, the ringing would be constant. Same volume. Same pitch. Every hour. Every day.
That is not what happens.
It gets louder when the room goes quiet. It spikes when you are stressed or tired. It fades when you are busy or distracted. Some mornings it is barely there. Other mornings it is the first thing you hear.
Damage does not respond to silence, stress, or attention. A damaged structure does not get louder because you are lying in bed at 2 AM.
Something else is keeping the signal turned up. Something that reacts to conditions. Something still active — not broken.
